Music education adapted for children who learn differently — including children with ADHD, autism and other additional learning needs.
Adapted Music Education
Some children do not thrive in a standard lesson format. That may be because of ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or simply a way of processing information that a conventional lesson does not accommodate. It is very rarely because the child is not musical.
Our Specialised Music Education Program adapts the pedagogy rather than lowering the expectations. Lesson structure, pacing, sensory environment and communication style are all adjusted to the individual child, working from what engages them rather than from a fixed curriculum sequence.
How We Adapt
Lessons broken into predictable short blocks with clear transitions, which supports attention regulation and reduces anxiety about what comes next.
Discuss your childVolume, lighting and room setup adjusted where sensory sensitivity is a factor, including the option of headphones throughout.
Book an assessmentMovement, colour, touch and visual aids alongside notation, so that a child who does not learn well from symbols alone still has a route in.
Music theoryRegular, honest communication about what is working at home and in the lesson, and adjustments made together rather than announced.
About our approachWhat We Offer, and What We Do Not
This is a music education programme delivered by piano teachers with experience adapting their teaching. It is not music therapy, and it is not a clinical or therapeutic intervention — we do not diagnose, assess or treat. Families sometimes observe benefits in attention, confidence or routine, and we are glad when that happens, but our purpose and expertise is teaching music well to children who need it taught differently. Where a child would benefit from clinical support, that is properly the domain of qualified therapists and clinicians, and we are happy to work alongside them.
Individualised pacing with no fixed timetable for progress
Teachers experienced in adapting lesson structure and communication
Ongoing partnership with parents and, where helpful, with a child's other professionals
Genuine musical goals — adapted method, not reduced ambition
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Our Specialised Music Education Program adapts lesson structure, pacing and environment for children with ADHD, using shorter structured segments, clear transitions and multi-sensory teaching. Many children with ADHD engage extremely well with music when the format suits them.
No. This is music education delivered by piano teachers experienced in adapted teaching. Music therapy is a distinct clinical discipline practised by qualified music therapists. We teach music; we do not provide therapeutic or clinical intervention.
Many do, and some thrive. Structure, predictability and pattern are qualities that suit a good number of autistic learners well. As with any child, the right approach depends on the individual, which is exactly what the assessment session is for.
It depends entirely on the child. Some students do best one-to-one; others benefit from a small, carefully composed group. We recommend a format after meeting your child rather than in advance.
Book an assessment session and tell us as much as you would like to about how your child learns. That conversation, plus meeting your child, gives us far more than any description could — and if we are not the right fit, we will say so.
